Deborah Sigmund

"Life Preserver Debbie Sigmund's "Innocents at Risk" charity, which raises awareness of the increased international trafficking of women and children, will hold its first major fundraiser on April 19 at the Library of Congress. Over the last three years, more than a dozen embassies have hosted monthly awareness meetings for this cause. In December, Ecuador's Fabiola Gallegos opened her handsome Kalorama residence to discuss this exploding problem and collect holiday gifts for Crossway Community, an innovative program for at-risk mothers and thier children providing not only housing but preschool education and intensive life skills development."

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their involvement and support over the past year and a half:

To Undersecretary Paula Dobriansky, Ambassador John Miller, Dr. Laura Lederer for all the support and information from the Trafficking In Persons Office, Department of State.

To all the Embassies who have hosted awareness events and for their continued support.

To Melanne Veveer, Wenchi Perkins, Vital Voices Global Partnership for hosting a meeting and for their constant guidance and partnership to produce an awareness film to educate the public on the issue.

To all the NGO’s who have hosted or participated in our awareness meetings:  Save the Children, Tahiri Justice Center, The Polaris Project, Shared Hope International, Vital Voices, and to Dr. Mohammed Matar, the Director of The Protection Project for all the educational seminars at the SAIS Johns Hopkins.

To the Inter-American Development Bank.

To all the special guests who come to our meetings to speak from the Department of State, the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Health and Human Services.

To Carl Colby, the award winning film producer who is producing the “Awareness Film” and his dedication to the project.

To our corporate support from Board Member Lorraine Naughton of Chevron who hosted a meeting in a Chevron conference room, who has helped with identifying sponsors.

To Neiman Marcus (Martha Slagel and Patti Cumming) for corporate support and for hosting a luncheon.

To all of you who have sent contributions, especially to our sponsors for all their support to raise funds for our film, our awareness campaign, and for our April Benefit in 2007.

To Dianne Bruce and Isabel Ernst for your efforts and agreeing to be co-chairs for our April Benefit.

The awareness film has now been taken to a new level with the participation of Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden.  Her film interview was excellent and Her Majesty stated that she is grateful for the support of Innocents at Risk and our work to end the trafficking of innocent children.  We are grateful to Annette Nilson of the Embassy of Sweden and everyone at the Royal Castle for making it possible to interview Her Majesty the Queen.  We are very grateful to Ambassador Gunner Lund who hosted a sponsor reception at his residence on October 5th, 2006.

We thank Ingrid Aielli who hosted a committee lunch at Teatro Goldoni on September 22, 2006.

On October 3rd, Mrs. Minerva Espinal, the wife of the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic, graciously hosted a coffee at her residence. Again, I appreciate all of you who are committed to helping save innocent lives.  It is so important that we all work together and continue our efforts.  Thank you all for your support.
